The browser needed three names to get past two trademark clashes
Mozilla's new browser launched in 2002 as Phoenix, then had to drop it after a trademark dispute with Phoenix Technologies. The replacement, Firebird, clashed with a database project that already had the name. In February 2004 it became Firefox, and this time Mozilla checked the name first.
