The name promised an air mattress and breakfast, and soon offered neither
It launched in 2008 as AirBed & Breakfast: guests slept on air mattresses in someone's home. Then hosts began listing whole homes, with no air mattress and no one making breakfast, and in March 2009 the founders shortened the name to Airbnb.
“Who's gonna make breakfast for them? Because we're Airbed and Breakfast.”
Brian Chesky, co-founder and CEO
